Tree Planting Efforts Could Actually Worsen Climate Change

CLIMATEWIRE | Carbon markets that fund forest preservation and tree-planting might actually be worsening climate change by increasing risks for wildfires that emit massive levels of greenhouse gases, a new United Nations-affiliated report says.

Forests have been seen as one of the most effective places to counter climate change by absorbing carbon emissions. But that’s changed, says a May paper from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), an academic arm of the international U.N.

In the past decade, wildfires of record-breaking size have erupted in places such as Canada, Australia, Siberia and the Amazon rainforest. This week, forest wildfires forced evacuations of thousands of Canadians in Manitoba and Alberta provinces.

“Forests and peatlands have increasingly transitioned into massive carbon emitters in many parts of the world due to increasing wildfires,” the report says. Climate policies and carbon-mitigation activities "fail to account for these substantial emissions.”

Rewards

Public studies (open to everyone): Public studies typically have one large reward (>$1000) for the winning response and several smaller rewards are given to Researchers who provided non-winning, but still valuable, research. These are challenging times for young people pursuing scientific careers. According to the U.S. Census, the growth of advanced degrees here in the U.S. continues. Approximately 13% of adults now have graduate degrees. Four million hold Ph.D.’s, more than twice the number of twenty years ago. On a global scale, OECD notes that Ph.D. scientists in every field have increased significantly, and particularly in STEM areas. In China, for example, 49,000 Ph.D.'s graduated in 2010, a four-fold increase in just a decade.

What’s the career impact of this increase for young scientists? According to the OECD research referenced above, a “dual labor market” has formed, that consists of “well-paid established researchers who often have permanent civil servant or public employee contracts, and on the other hand a growing number of cheaper temporary staff recruited with soft money.”

For example, in a survey of 38 EU and EU-partner countries, a significant proportion of early career researchers held either fixed term contracts or no contracts at all. In fact, the OECD study reports, “Almost 90% of Ph.D. researchers were in precarious working conditions with no or less than two year contractual horizons while 90% of leading senior researchers were on permanent positions.” The consequence of this duality is severe. Young scientists, apart from a few “stars”, have little job or career security and few opportunities to win permanent or tenured positions. They have less rewarding compensation (often making it difficult to repay student loans), less access to funding for their research and for ongoing training and career development support and weaker career prospects. And, as many assert, Universities churn out more Ph.D.'s than there are tenure-track positions “precisely because graduate students allow research scientists to focus on their own projects rather than teaching and grading undergraduates.”

What’s the outcome of this asymmetry? A recent study “Changing demographics of scientific careers: The rise of the temporary workforce” found that half of university scientists leave academic life after just five years. That's a huge change; according to the study, published in the Proceedings in the National Academy of Sciences, academic scientists in the 1960s stayed in the ivory tower for an average of 35 years.

An international group of scientists is demanding scientific journals demand more transparency from researchers in computer-related areas when accepting their reports for publication.

They also want computational researchers to include information about their code, models, and computational environments in published reports.

Their call, published in Nature Magazine in October, was in response to the results of research conducted by Google Health that was published in Nature last January.

The research claimed an artificial intelligence system was faster and more accurate at screening for breast cancer than human radiologists.

Google funded the study, which was led by Google Scholar Scott McKinney and other Google employees.

Criticisms of the Google Study

“In their study, McKinney et al. showed the high potential of artificial intelligence for breast cancer screening,” the international group of scientists, led by Benjamin Haibe-Kains, of the University of Toronto, stated.

“However, the lack of detailed methods and computer code undermines its scientific value. This shortcoming limits the evidence required for others to prospectively validate and clinically implement such technologies.”Scientific progress depends on the ability of independent researchers to scrutinize the results of a research study, reproduce its main results using its materials, and build upon them in future studies, the scientists said, citing Nature Magazine’s policies.

McKinney and his co-authors stated that it was not feasible to release the code used for training the models because it has a large number of dependencies on internal tooling, infrastructure, and hardware, Haibe-Kains’ group noted.
